Discovery of the New Species in Arunachal Pradesh.
Recently, three new species of rove beetles were discovered in Arunachal Pradesh, and this fact emphasizes the richness and under-researched character of the region. The discovery supports the existence of Northeast India as an international biodiversity hotspot and confirms the need to conduct more scientific studies and protect vulnerable ecosystems.
About Rove Beetles
Rove beetles are members of the family Staphylinidae which is among the biggest known beetle families. They are small, quick insects whose wing covers (elytra) are short, exposing the greater part of the abdomen. An interesting behaviour is their scorpion like pose, whereby they lift their abdomen on threat although they do not sting.
Habitat and Distribution
Rove beetles are global and can survive in a wide variety of damp conditions. They usually live in litter of the leaves, soil, tree bark, fungi, compost, and rotting organic materials. They are very adaptable as they are found in different climates such as tropical and temperate.
Ecological Role and Behaviour.
The beetles are primarily predators and they are beneficial in regulating the population of pests. They tend to be close to decaying food, on which they feed on other small creatures. Other species appear and behave like ants or wasps to escape predators, as a sign of sophisticated survival mechanisms.
Exam-Focused Points
- Family: Staphylinidae (one of the largest families of beetles)
- Characteristic: Short elytra with abdomen exposed.
- Behaviour: Scorpion-like guardedness.
- Places of habitats: Wet areas and rotting food.
- Use: Natural agents of pest control.
Distinctive Characteristics and Life Cycle.
The beetles are known as rove beetles and they have glands of chemical defence that they use to emit irritant substances as a form of defence. The environmental conditions differ in terms of their life cycle, which can take several months or even a few weeks. Their ecological significance, adaptability, and defense characteristics make them essential parts of earth systems.
