Meghalaya Debuts at BIOFACH 2026 as Organic Sourcing Hub

Meghalaya Promotes Organic Ecosystem at BIOFACH Germany

Meghalaya made its inaugural appearance at BIOFACH 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany, positioning itself as a policy-supported organic sourcing destination from India’s northeast. BIOFACH, internationally recognised as the premier trade fair for organic food and agriculture, hosted participants from more than 90 countries. India’s selection as the ‘Country of the Year’ provided enhanced visibility for Indian producers and state-led initiatives.

Strategic Vision and Institutional Framework

The Meghalaya delegation was headed by Vijay Kumar D , commissioner and secretary to the state government and chairman of the Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture (MEGNOLIA). The delegation outlined Meghalaya’s long-term organic development strategy, highlighting community-driven agriculture, ecological sustainability, structured certification, and export-focused value chains.

Officials emphasised the state’s integrated ecosystem that combines farmer collectivisation, traceability mechanisms, branding strategies, and compliance with international organic standards.

Farmer Representation and Market Dialogues

A distinctive element of Meghalaya’s participation was the involvement of farmer representatives. Trinity Saioo , known for Lakadong turmeric cultivation in Jaintia Hills, and Ringnang Kongkal Sangma , a black pepper grower from Garo Hills, engaged directly with global buyers and certification bodies.

These interactions focused on quality assurance, value addition, packaging improvements, and sustainable sourcing practices. Farmers highlighted that exposure to international benchmarks would enhance productivity and global competitiveness.

State Organic Mission 2028

Meghalaya’s organic expansion is guided by the State Organic Mission 2028 , targeting one lakh hectares under certified organic farming. The mission prioritises institutional capacity building, farmer training, and strengthening of market linkages.

The state has already developed export markets for products such as Lakadong turmeric, pineapple, ginger, Khasi mandarin, and black pepper.
