March 2026, Gurgaon tops the list of the worst polluted cities in India

Increased Air Pollution in India.

Air pollution is still a significant public health issue in India. According to a recent report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), air quality in big cities is deteriorating. The results emphasize the necessity of more powerful policy measures and permanent action to regulate the amount of pollution.

Gurgaon is the leader in Pollution.

In March 2026, Gurgaon became the most polluted city with the average PM2.5 of 116 µg/m3. This is much higher than the recommended safety standards and has serious health consequences especially to children, the elderly and those with respiratory illnesses.

Haryana and Other Super polluted Cities.

The most polluted ten cities in the country include Haryana with four cities such as Bahadurgarh, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Manesar. The rest of the cities in the list are Singraeli, Mandideep, Ghaziabad, Bhiwadi, Noida and Nandesari. These results imply that the problem of pollution is not limited to a single region but rather is present in many states.

Long-Term Trends and Adherence problems.

Although Gurgaon was the best in the March rankings, Ghaziabad was the most polluted during the entire financial year 202526. A significant number of cities are still above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Haryana and Uttar Pradesh possess a large proportion of non-compliant city, which indicates structural issues.

Clean Air Initiatives Performance.

The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) has also been a mixed success. Certain cities especially in Uttar Pradesh have experienced significant drops in PM10. Improvements have also been reported in cities in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. But the level of pollution has been rising in states such as Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh suggesting uneven development.

Requirement of More Powerful Policy Response.

Scientists underline the need of specific and scientific interventions. Recommendations are to increase the range of NCAP, take the regional approach, and implement more stringent emission standards. It is important to reduce the sources of pollution like motor emissions, industry, construction dust, etc, in the long run.

Exam-Focused Key Points

  • In March 2026 Gurgaon had the highest PM2.5 (116 µg/m 3 ).
  • CREA report monitors the trends of air pollution in Indian cities.
  • The number of cities in Haryana that are in the top 10 list of the most polluted are four.
  • The city with the highest pollution in the FY 202526 is Ghaziabad.
