Sacred 872-Year-Old Jain Relics to be Worshipped in Rajasthan
Rajasthan’s desert city of Jaisalmer will host India’s inaugural Jain Chadar Mahotsav from 6 to 8 March 2026. The three-day religious congregation will revolve around the veneration of the 872-year-old garments of Dada Shri Jindatt Suri Maharaj, safeguarded within the Gyan Bhandar manuscript library of a historic Jain temple. Organisers anticipate participation from Jain ascetics, prominent dignitaries and more than 30,000 devotees nationwide.
Historical Importance of the Sacred Garments
Temple authorities state that the relics trace back to Vikram Samvat 1211, marking the samadhi of the first Dada Gurudev in Ajmer. While the saint’s mortal remains were cremated, tradition holds that the garments endured. During a devastating epidemic in Vikram Samvat 1945, the ruling Maharawal requested their transfer from Patan, Gujarat, to Jaisalmer. Since then, the Chadar, Cholpatta and Muhpatti have remained preserved as revered spiritual artefacts associated with Dada Shri Jindatt Suri Maharaj, a central figure of the Khartar Gachchh lineage.
Religious and Political Presence
The Mahotsav will proceed under the guidance of Khartargachchhadhipati Acharya Jin Maniprabh Surishwar Maharaj. Several senior Jain monks are expected to attend. Among dignitaries likely to participate are Mohan Bhagwat, Amit Shah, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Bhajan Lal Sharma and Gulab Chandra Kataria, reflecting the event’s national visibility.
Key Ceremonial Events
The programme includes ritual inaugurations, devotional aarti and a grand Varghoda procession featuring elephants, horses, palanquins and tableaux. The highlight will be the public darshan of the ancient Chadar. Cultural presentations and ceremonial conferrals of Acharya and Ganini positions are also scheduled.
