Indigenous Boost to India’s Layered Air Defence

A Bengaluru-based defence firm has successfully completed a comprehensive digital upgrade of the Indian Air Force’s Pechora surface-to-air missile system, reinforcing India’s drive to modernise legacy military platforms through indigenous capability. The milestone enhances the operational relevance of a decades-old air defence asset and strengthens the country’s layered air defence architecture against evolving aerial threats.

Extending the Life of a Cold War–Era System

The Pechora system, inducted into the Indian Air Force in the 1970s, has long served as a dependable component of India’s ground-based air defence network. However, advances in electronic warfare, precision-guided munitions and low-observable platforms had begun to challenge its effectiveness. To address obsolescence without incurring the high cost of full replacement, the IAF opted for a deep modernisation programme focused on life extension and capability enhancement.

In September 2020, Alpha Design Technologies was awarded a ₹591.3 crore contract to execute the upgrade, marking one of the most ambitious private-sector-led modernisation projects for a legacy missile system in India.

Full Digitisation and Indigenous Subsystems

The upgrade has transformed the Pechora into a fully digitised system, significantly improving reaction time, tracking accuracy and maintainability. Alpha Design Technologies indigenously developed and supplied several critical subsystems, including thermal imaging–based fire control units, software-defined radios, handheld laser target designators and missile launch detection systems. These enhancements reduce reliance on imported spares and align closely with India’s self-reliance objectives in defence manufacturing.

Officials associated with the programme noted that digitisation also simplifies training and logistics, enabling quicker fault diagnosis and higher system availability during operational deployments.

Successful Trials in Desert Conditions

User trials of the first fully upgraded Pechora unit were successfully conducted at the Pokhran between November 6 and December 26, 2025. Live missile firings validated the upgraded system’s performance under field conditions, demonstrating its readiness for operational induction.

The modernised Pechora is expected to play a role in Mission Sudarshan Chakra, India’s broader effort to build an integrated air defence shield capable of countering threats ranging from small unmanned aerial systems to high-speed combat aircraft.
