India Updates NDC Targets: 60% Non-Fossil Power and 47% Emission Reduction by 2035
India has announced enhanced climate targets under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), aiming to accelerate progress by 2035. These commitments will be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in line with the Paris Agreement.
Enhanced Climate Targets for 2035
The updated targets include achieving 60% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources, reducing emissions intensity of GDP by 47% from 2005 levels, and expanding carbon sinks to 3.5–4 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. These goals reflect a stronger push towards clean energy, improved efficiency and ecological restoration.
Comparison with Existing Commitments
India’s earlier NDC (2022) set 2030 targets of 50% non-fossil power capacity, 44% emissions intensity reduction and 2.5–3 billion tonnes of carbon sinks. Progress has been notable, with non-fossil capacity already crossing 50%. Emissions intensity has declined significantly since 2005, indicating steady advancement towards climate goals, although renewable energy’s share in actual power generation remains lower than installed capacity.
Global Climate Framework and Principles
India’s commitments are guided by the principle of Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities, which emphasises equity in global climate action. The updated targets also align with insights from the Global Stocktake process, which evaluates global progress in limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C.
Challenges and Global Context
Despite progress, challenges persist in expanding forest cover, currently below the national target of 33%. India continues to balance development priorities with climate action. The revised NDC highlights India’s leadership among developing nations, especially at a time when global mitigation efforts remain uneven.
