India to Host Pioneering Global Big Cats Summit in 2026

India Set to Lead Pioneering Global Summit on Big Cat Conservation in 2026

India will host the  world's first international summit dedicated exclusively to big cat conservation  in 2026, solidifying its position as a global leader in wildlife protection and environmental stewardship. The landmark announcement was made by  Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman  during her presentation of the  Union Budget 2026-27  in Parliament.

Summit Scope and Global Participation
The inaugural  Global Big Cats Summit  will be organized under the framework of the  International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) . The event is poised to convene  Heads of State, environment ministers, conservation experts, and senior officials  from approximately  95 big cat range countries . The agenda will focus on forging collaborative strategies for  habitat conservation, anti-poaching efforts, genetic diversity, and mitigating climate change impacts  on these apex predators.

International Big Cat Alliance: A Treaty-Based Initiative
The IBCA, launched by  Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 9, 2023 , formally became an  operational treaty-based intergovernmental organization on January 23, 2025 . Possessing international legal status, the Alliance serves as a permanent platform for  cooperation among range countries , facilitating knowledge sharing, coordinated policy-making, and the mobilization of financial and technical resources for conservation programs.

Big Cats: Ecological Significance and Definition
The term 'big cats' primarily refers to the large felids of the genus  Panthera —the  tiger, lion, leopard, jaguar, and snow leopard —all of which possess the anatomical ability to roar. Other large felids like the  cheetah and puma  are also included due to their ecological significance. As  flagship, keystone, and umbrella species , big cats are vital for maintaining ecosystem health; their protection ensures the preservation of vast forests, grasslands, and the intricate web of biodiversity within them.

India's Conservation Legacy and Global Leadership
India is a critical habitat for iconic species including the  Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, Indian leopard, snow leopard, and the reintroduced cheetah . By hosting this summit, India aims to galvanize  transboundary cooperation  for species that cross political borders, such as tigers in Asia and snow leopards across the Himalayas, thereby framing big cat conservation as a  shared global imperative .
