Defence Modernisation Boost: MoD Contracts for Air Defence and Naval Aviation
The Ministry of Defence has finalised two contracts worth ₹858 crore to enhance military preparedness, focusing on air defence systems and naval aviation maintenance capabilities.
Tunguska Missile System Procurement
A ₹445 crore agreement has been signed with JSC Rosoboronexport for the acquisition of the Tunguska Air Defence Missile System. This system is designed to counter a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones and cruise missiles. Its induction will strengthen India’s layered air defence architecture and reflects continued defence cooperation between India and Russia.
P-8I Aircraft Maintenance Contract
A separate ₹413 crore contract has been awarded to Boeing India Defense Private Ltd for depot-level inspection of the P-8I maritime patrol aircraft. The P-8I fleet is a critical asset of the Indian Navy, used for long-range surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. The contract falls under the “Buy Indian” category, ensuring full indigenous execution through domestic MRO facilities.
Boost to Indigenous Defence Capability
The localisation of maintenance operations supports the government’s push for self-reliance under initiatives like Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Developing in-country Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) infrastructure reduces dependency on foreign service providers, enhances operational readiness and creates skilled employment opportunities within India.
