India’s higher education system has registered significant progress in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, marked by a broader global presence and improved performance across disciplines. A total of 99 Indian institutions were featured, contributing 599 entries across 55 subjects. The data reflects a consistent upward trajectory, with a substantial share of institutions improving their rankings—an indicator of rising academic quality and international recognition.


Rising Global Footprint

The QS rankings, compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, assessed over 21,000 academic programmes across 1,900 universities worldwide. India added 120 new entries this year, positioning it among the fastest-growing education systems globally. Notably, 44 per cent of Indian entries recorded an improvement, demonstrating steady progress across subjects. However, no Indian institution has yet broken into the global top 10 in any subject.


IIM Ahmedabad’s Landmark Achievement

The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad secured the 21st position globally in Business and Management Studies. This accomplishment places it among the world’s leading management institutions, driven by strong academic reputation and employer recognition. The institute’s consistent performance reinforces its stature as a premier hub for management education.


Expanding Management Education Strength

India now has seven institutions ranked in the global top 100 for Business and Management Studies, a rise from four in the previous year—highlighting growing depth in management education beyond a handful of elite schools. Additionally, IIM Ahmedabad entered the QS rankings for Marketing for the first time, also securing the 21st position, marking a significant milestone for Indian academia.
