India Enters Global Clean Energy Export Market with First Green Ammonia Project

$10 Billion Green Ammonia Project in Andhra Pradesh Boosts India’s Energy Transition

India is poised to make a significant entry into the global clean energy export ecosystem with the launch of its first large-scale green ammonia project in Kakinada . Anchored by a $10 billion investment, the project marks a critical step in India’s shift towards low-carbon energy systems and positions Andhra Pradesh as a strategic hub for green hydrogen and green ammonia production.


Project Launch and Location Significance

Construction of the flagship facility will commence at Kakinada, with the initial equipment installation ceremony overseen by N Chandrababu Naidu . Developed by AM Green , the project involves the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia–urea complex, enabling faster deployment while reducing environmental and capital costs. The location offers proximity to ports, making it ideal for large-scale exports.


Scale of Investment and Employment Generation

With a planned capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the facility is set to become the largest green ammonia project in the world. The $10 billion investment is expected to generate up to 8,000 jobs during the construction phase, along with sustained high-skill employment in renewable energy operations, logistics, energy storage, and port-linked services. This significantly enhances Andhra Pradesh’s clean-energy-driven industrial base.


Phased Commissioning and Integrated Energy Systems

The project will be commissioned in stages—0.5 MTPA by 2027, 1.0 MTPA by 2028, and the full 1.5 MTPA capacity by 2030. The integrated infrastructure includes 7.5 GW of combined solar and wind power, 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity, and 2 GW of round-the-clock renewable energy. Energy reliability will be ensured through pumped hydro storage, including the country’s first such project at Pinnapuram .


Export Potential and Strategic Value

AM Green has already secured long-term offtake agreements with global energy players, including Uniper , and is actively engaging partners in Japan and Singapore. Green ammonia produced at Kakinada will be exported for use in clean shipping fuels, power generation, and hydrogen-based energy pathways. This positions India as an emerging supplier in the global green fuel value chain and strengthens its leadership in clean energy diplomacy.
