India Becomes First Nation to Commercially Produce Bio-Bitumen for Roads

CSIR-Led Bio-Bitumen Marks Major Leap in India’s Green Highway Push

India has achieved a global first by commercially producing bio-bitumen for road construction , marking a landmark step in sustainable infrastructure development. The announcement was made by Nitin Gadkari , Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, at the CSIR Technology Transfer Ceremony held in New Delhi.

What is Bio-Bitumen and Why It Matters

Bitumen is a petroleum-based, black, viscous binding material widely used in road construction. Bio-bitumen is a sustainable alternative developed from biomass and agricultural waste , reducing reliance on crude oil. According to the Minister, the innovation not only cuts fossil fuel consumption but also provides a productive solution to crop residue burning , a major cause of seasonal air pollution in northern India.

CSIR’s Role in Sustainable Innovation

The Minister congratulated the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for translating laboratory research into commercial-scale production. The development of bio-bitumen demonstrates India’s growing capacity in indigenous technology development , innovation, and effective technology transfer for large public infrastructure projects.

Alignment with National Development Goals

Mr Gadkari described bio-bitumen as a transformative innovation aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 . By converting agricultural waste into a high-value construction input, the initiative promotes circular economy practices , reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and supports the creation of cleaner and more sustainable highways across the country.

Clean Highways and Atma Nirbhar Bharat

Addressing the event, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh said the achievement signals the start of a new era of clean and green highways in India. He noted that bio-bitumen strengthens the Waste to Wealth mission and advances Atma Nirbhar Bharat by reducing import dependence and encouraging the use of home-grown, environmentally responsible technologies.

The commercial rollout of bio-bitumen positions India as a global leader in sustainable road construction and highlights how science-driven innovation can directly support climate action, pollution reduction, and economic self-reliance.
