Indo-Thai Military Cooperation Deepens with Advanced Air Platforms
The Indian Air Force (IAF) is conducting a joint in-situ air exercise with the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF), reinforcing bilateral defence engagement and enhancing operational interoperability. The exercise highlights growing military coordination between the two Indo-Pacific partners.
Advanced Air Platforms in Action
The exercise features participation from key combat and support assets. The IAF has deployed Su-30MKI multirole fighters alongside force multipliers such as AWACS , AEW&C , and IL-78 mid-air refuelling aircraft . Thailand’s Gripen fighter jets represent the RTAF’s frontline capability.
The involvement of airborne surveillance systems enables integrated command-and-control training, while aerial refuelling platforms extend mission endurance and simulate long-range operational scenarios.
Focus on Operational Interoperability
Joint missions are designed to improve coordination in complex aerial engagements. Such exercises strengthen tactical integration, communication protocols, and situational awareness — critical components of modern air warfare.
The presence of force multipliers underscores emphasis on network-centric operations, where surveillance, decision-making, and strike elements operate cohesively.
Expanding Indo-Thai Defence Relations
India and Thailand formalised defence cooperation through an MoU signed in 2012. Since then, engagement has expanded across domains, including joint patrols, training exchanges, and high-level staff talks. Continued exercises reflect sustained military diplomacy.
Strategic Context in the Indo-Pacific
Thailand’s Act West policy aligns with India’s Act East strategy, reinforcing shared interests in regional security and stability. Defence cooperation complements broader economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
