OVERVIEW
On 12 May 2026, Himanta Biswa Sarma became the Chief Minister of Assam for the second time in a row. The swearing-in ceremony took place in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, many Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers from BJP and NDA states attended the event. Four other leaders also took oath as ministers. The NDA alliance won a big majority in the recent assembly elections. This is the third term for the NDA government in Assam since 2016.
HIMANTA BISWA SARMA – SECOND TERM AS CM
Himanta Biswa Sarma took the oath as Chief Minister of Assam on 12 May 2026. This is his second consecutive term. He first became the Chief Minister in 2021. Before that, he served as a senior minister in the previous BJP governments. Under his leadership, the BJP and its allies have now won three straight terms since 2016.
The oath was administered by Lakshman Prasad Acharya , the Governor of Assam. The ceremony was held at the Khanapara Veterinary College field in Guwahati.

ASSAM GOVERNMENT FORMATION 2026 – ELECTION RESULTS
The assembly elections were held recently. On 4 May 2026, the results were announced. The NDA alliance won a two-thirds majority. Here is the seat breakdown:
