WWF India’s Child-Friendly Ecology Map for Schools
Goa is set to introduce its first biodiversity and cultural features map, developed by WWF India , designed as an engaging educational resource for schoolchildren. The map will be released at the Goa Art and Literature Festival and distributed free of cost to schools in both print and digital formats.
Showcasing Everyday Biodiversity
The map visually represents 48 commonly observed species , spanning birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, marine organisms, and mangrove ecosystems. The emphasis is on species that children are likely to encounter in their immediate surroundings, encouraging recognition of local biodiversity rather than distant or rare wildlife. This approach promotes relatable ecological awareness.
Supporting NEP-Based Learning
The initiative complements the National Education Policy 2020 , which prioritises experiential and contextual learning. WWF India-Goa has initiated teacher training programmes involving hundreds of educators, integrating environmental literacy into classroom pedagogy. The biodiversity map functions as a continuous visual aid rather than a one-time activity.
Integrating Culture with Ecology
In addition to biological elements, the map incorporates Goa’s cultural heritage. Traditional motifs such as Kaavi art , Kunbi attire, and the folk dance Ghoddemodni are featured alongside references to local practices. The artwork adopts a folk-indica style to balance educational clarity with visual authenticity.
Educational and Conservation Impact
By embedding biodiversity into classroom environments, the initiative aims to stimulate ongoing discussions about local ecosystems, conservation values, and sustainable practices.
