Devika Sihag Claims First BWF Super 300 Crown
Young Indian badminton player Devika Sihag achieved a major career milestone by clinching her maiden BWF Super 300 title at the Thailand Masters. The 20-year-old from Haryana secured the women’s singles crown after her opponent was forced to retire in the final, marking her biggest success on the international badminton circuit so far.
One-Sided Final Before Injury Halted Play
The championship match at the USD 250,000 Thailand Masters ended prematurely when Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei withdrew due to a hamstring injury. At the time of retirement, Devika was completely dominant, having won the opening game 21–8 and racing to a 6–3 lead in the second. The convincing advantage underlined Devika’s control and composure on the big stage.
Breakthrough Moment on the World Tour
Ranked world No. 63 before the tournament, Devika’s Super 300 triumph represents a defining step in her career. The victory brings valuable ranking points and strengthens her position on the BWF World Tour, signalling her readiness to compete consistently at higher-tier international events. It also reflects India’s growing depth in women’s singles badminton beyond established stars.
Training, Mentorship and Gradual Progress
Devika trains at the Padukone–Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru under coach Umendra Rana. She has also gained exposure through training stints alongside two-time Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu under Indonesian coach Irwansyah Adi Pratama. Her rise has been marked by steady improvement, built on discipline, fitness, and match temperament rather than sudden breakthroughs.
