Industrial Compliance and Water Quality Improvement in Damanganga River
The Government has initiated targeted measures to improve water quality in the Damanganga River, focusing on industrial regulation, pollution control and sustainable river management practices.
Regulatory Action Against Polluting Industries
The Gujarat Pollution Control Board is enforcing environmental norms through strict actions against violators. These include issuing closure notices and levying Environmental Damage Compensation based on the “polluter pays” principle. Additionally, initiatives such as Open House sessions and Environmental Clinics are conducted to help industries adopt cleaner and compliant practices.
Seasonal Pollution Control Strategies
Authorities have implemented season-specific action plans to tackle pollution. During winter, stricter emission controls are enforced due to limited atmospheric dispersion, including enhanced monitoring and maintenance of pollution control systems. In the monsoon, emphasis is placed on preventing water contamination through efficient effluent treatment, proper stormwater management and safe storage of chemicals.
Effluent Treatment and ZLD Compliance
The Central Pollution Control Board has clarified that Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) is not universally mandatory. However, in regions like Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, industries must install Effluent Treatment Plants and ensure reuse of treated wastewater within their premises to achieve ZLD compliance.
National River Conservation Efforts
The Ministry of Jal Shakti supports pollution abatement through schemes like the National River Conservation Plan. This programme funds infrastructure such as sewage treatment plants, sewer networks and riverfront development to restore river health and promote sustainable water use.
