Introduction

India has taken another major step towards becoming a global semiconductor hub. The Union Cabinet led by Narendra Modi has approved two new semiconductor projects under the India Semiconductor Mission.

These projects involve a combined investment of more than ?3,936 crore. Both projects will be established in Gujarat.

The Union Cabinet has approved the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0. This decision is important for businesses that need financial support during difficult economic conditions.

The ECLGS is a government-backed credit guarantee programme. It was first launched in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme was designed to help stressed businesses by providing additional loans with government guarantees.

Introduction

A proposal to augment the power of the judges of the Supreme Court of India has been approved by the Union Cabinet headed by Narendra Modi.

The ratified strength will be 37 judges as opposed to 33 judges and this does not include the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Currently, a total sanctioned strength of 34 judges including the CJI are present in the Supreme Court. The new plan will increase the total number of 38 including the Chief Justice.

The change will be proposed with the help of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026.

This is to decrease unresolved cases and to increase the rate at which justice can be delivered.

Introduction

The Union Cabinet has given the go-ahead to major railway multitracking projects in 19 districts in India. The decision is relevant to the development of the railway infrastructure in the country.
Railway multitracking refers to the process of providing more railway tracks on the already existing routes. These additional lines assist trains to travel at a higher speed and to minimise congestion on the busy railway section.
The project will enhance passenger services, freight traffic and general efficiency of the railways.
