Commissioning of INS Aridhaman Improves India’s Nuclear Deterrent Capabilities
With the addition of INS Aridhaman, India has bolstered its strategic strength by adding another weapon in its arsenal. The nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), commissioned by Rajnath Singh, further fortifies India’s nuclear triad.
Third SSBN in Project ATV
INS Aridhaman belongs to the Arihant-class of nuclear submarines being developed by India in the context of its Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project. Following INS Arihant in 2016 and INS Arighaat in 2024, INS Aridhaman makes India only one among six nations that have SSBN capability.
Importance of SSBN in a Nation’s Nuclear Triad
A ship-submersible ballistic nuclear (SSBN) is regarded as the most dependable element of a nuclear triad owing to its capability to remain undetected under water. With better design and less noise than its predecessors, the submarine is an asset to India’s second-strike capability.
Indigenous Defence Manufacturing and Defence Development
The development of INS Aridhaman showcases India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing with the use of state-of-the-art nuclear propulsion system. Tested extensively before commissioning, it contributes to the growth in defence sector according to the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” policy of India.
