CMS COP15 Increases the cover of migratory species.
The Convention on Migratory Species 15 th Conference of Parties (COP15) has introduced 40 new species to the list of species under protection. This move demonstrates that the world is increasingly concerned about the extinction of migratory species and requires more concerted efforts.
Convention on migratory Species.
The Bonn Convention or Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) is an international environmental agreement. It was signed in 1979 in Germany and works under the United Nations Environment Programme. The convention aims at safeguarding animals which cross national boundaries in the process of their life cycle.
Goals and Major Characteristics.
CMS is focused on the conservation of migratory species and their habitats. It includes the land, water and air animals. The convention stimulates nations to collaborate to minimize threats such as habitat degradation, global warming and excessive resource exploitation. It also promotes sustainable exploitation of biodiversity.
Form and Operating Process.
COP is the primary decision-making body of CMS that holds regular meetings. The convention has two appendices. Endangered species that require stern protection are in Appendix I. Appendix II contains the species that need intercountry cooperation in conservation. CMS employs legal contracts as well as flexible arrangements to meet its objectives.
