The last surviving player of the very first Indian team to win a Test is Chingleput Doraiswamy Gopinath who died at 96. His death which was affirmed by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association is the end of a great era in Indian cricket history. In 1932, India played its first Test against England, but it had to endure a lengthy losing streak. The team took almost 20 years to win its first game. Following a number of well-fought games, India won its first Test match in Chennai where it defeated England by an innings and eight runs. Gopinath’s Contribution
C.D. Gopinath had a significant contribution in this historic match. He batted number eight and made a precious 35 run, which enabled India to approach a powerful score of 457/9. In reply, England were bowled out firstly, 266, and then 183, in the second innings. Gopinath had also impressed on debut in the series with an unbeaten 50, the only half-century of his Test career.

His international career was short but the impact of Gopinath is long-lasting. He belonged to a group that had changed the face of Indian cricketing as a team that was struggling to compete to a team that could compete. When he died, he was one of the oldest living Test cricketers. He is remembered as a trailblazer who contributed towards the development of early cricket in India.
