NIMHANS–NCBS Develop CALM-Brain Digital Platform for Mental Health Data
Researchers at the Rohini Nilekani Centre for Brain and Mind have developed CALM-Brain, an advanced digital repository designed to study neuropsychiatric disorders. The initiative strengthens India’s capacity for data-driven mental health research.
About CALM-Brain Initiative
CALM-Brain is a first-of-its-kind platform in India that compiles extensive data on brain structure and function across psychiatric conditions. It originated in 2016 under the ADBS programme and is supported by institutions such as National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences and National Centre for Biological Sciences, with funding from the Department of Biotechnology and the Pratiksha Trust.
Scope and Data Collection
The repository integrates diverse datasets, including clinical records, neuroimaging scans, behavioural assessments and genetic information. It focuses on five major disorders—addiction, bipolar disorder, dementia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and schizophrenia—allowing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary understanding of brain-related conditions.

The platform aims to uncover patterns related to disease onset, progression and biological mechanisms. By providing open access to researchers and clinicians, it promotes collaboration and accelerates advancements in neuroscience.
