Severe Earthquake Rocks Eastern Indonesia

A severe earthquake measuring 7.4 magnitude rocked eastern Indonesia, causing panic, minor damages, and brief tsunami warnings. The earthquake took place in the Molucca Sea, a seismically active area located between Sulawesi and Maluku Islands.

Epicenter and Seismic Features

As per the USGS, the epicenter of the quake lay around 35 km below sea level. A shallow focus earthquake results in more intense ground shaking effects, thus increasing its destructive capabilities. The area is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," which is well-known for its seismic and volcanic activities because of the movement of tectonic plates.

Damage and Casualties

At least one person died in Manado due to the collapse of a building, while another suffered injuries. The residents felt strong vibrations and evacuated from their houses and other public places. Some structures sustained minor and moderate damages, but there were no catastrophic consequences.

Tsunami Warning and Sea Activities

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a temporary tsunami warning for a maximum of 1,000 km from the epicenter. The waves reached a height of 75 cm in some regions of North Sulawesi. But the alert was soon withdrawn as the condition remained stable.
