West Bengal Approves Free Bus Travel and Rs3,000 Monthly Aid for Women

Overview

On 18 May 2026, the West Bengal government approved two big schemes for women. The first is free bus travel on all state-run buses. The second is the Annapurna Yojana (also called Annapurna Bhandar Scheme). Under this, eligible women will get ₹3,000 per month. Both schemes will start on 1 June 2026. This is a major step to help women with transport and household expenses.

Anaimangalam Copper Plates-Leiden Plates-Come Back Home After 300 Years

Overview

The Netherlands has returned the 11th-century Anaimangalam Copper Plates to India. These plates are also called the Leiden Plates. They were handed over during the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the Netherlands. The plates belong to the Chola Empire. They give valuable information about maritime trade, religious tolerance, and cultural exchange between India and Southeast Asia.

On 17 May 2026, Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the Nimapara Patha Utsav 2026. The event was held in the Nimapara area of Puri district. This festival celebrates traditional Odia folk arts. It also promotes youth engagement, sports, public awareness, and development. Sikkim to Implement Anand Marriage Act from June 1, 2026

Overview

Sikkim will implement the Anand Marriage Act, 1909 from 1 June 2026. This law allows Sikh couples to register their marriages directly through the traditional Anand Karaj ceremony. Until now, many Sikh couples in Sikkim had to register under the Hindu Marriage Act because local rules were missing. The Union Law Ministry has officially notified the change. Sikkim has also framed the Sikkim Anand Marriage Registration Rules, 2026 to make this possible.

West Bengal Raises Age Limit for Government Job Recruitment

West Bengal has raised the upper age limit for state government jobs. The change started from 11 May 2026. The Finance Department (Audit Branch) issued a notification. The new rules amend the West Bengal Services (Raising of Age-limit) Rules, 1981. Now, more people can apply for government posts. This is good news for job seekers in the state.
