Tragedy in Kishtwar: A wake-up call

The quaint little hamlet of Chasoti located near Machail Mata temple in Kishtwar district became the next victim of Jammu & Kashmir’s increasing weather vagaries, as flash floods, caused by heavy rainfall, washed away scores of its residents, killing at least 65 and leaving more than 50 missing. This was no isolated tragedy – it signaled a disturbing trend of climate-related disasters in the Himalayas.

PelV-1

A massive pandemic situated to the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre has been recently found and was known as the PelV-1 virus.  A long tail that is much longer than the known virus in the Pelagodinium plankton was found to be infected by this virus.  Around 19 times longer than the COVID-19 coronavirus, the tail is 2.3 micrometers in length.  The discovery contributes to significant new information concerning viruses in the marine ecosystem.

The prehistoric humans in Wallacea

 According to recent discoveries that have been made in Sulawesi, Indonesia, it is claimed that the early settlement by human beings in the Wallacea region occurred about 1.5 million years ago.  In fact, stone tools that were found by archeologists have pointed to the fact that Homo erectus lived in islands between Asia and Australia much earlier than earlier postulated.  This throws doubt on the preconceived ideas of early migration patterns and nautical skills of the humans.
