Suvendu Adhikari to Become 9th CM of West Bengal BJP Ends TMC 14-Year Rule

Overview

On  8 May 2026 Suvendu Adhikari  was elected leader of the BJP legislative party in West Bengal. He will take oath as the  9th Chief Minister of West Bengal  on  9 May 2026 . The BJP won the 2026 state election, ending the Trinamool Congress's 14-year rule. Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in both Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies.

Big Change in West Bengal Government

On  8 May 2026 , the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chose  Suvendu Adhikari  as the leader of its legislative party in West Bengal. The next day, on  9 May 2026 , he will take oath as the  9th Chief Minister  of the state. This is a historic moment. The BJP won the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. This ended the  Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule of 14 years .

What Is the Role of a Chief Minister?

The Chief Minister is the head of the elected government in a state. This rule comes from  Article 164  of the Constitution of India. The Chief Minister is always the leader of the majority party or coalition in the Legislative Assembly. West Bengal became a state in 1950. The Chief Minister leads the Council of Ministers.

About the West Bengal Legislative Assembly

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has only one house (unicameral). It has  294 seats . People elect members for a  five-year term . The election uses the  first-past-the-post system  – the candidate with the most votes wins. The Assembly meets in Kolkata at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly building.

Suvendu Adhikari's Big Wins: Bhabanipur and Nandigram

In the 2026 election, Suvendu Adhikari defeated  Mamata Banerjee  in the  Bhabanipur  constituency. He also won from  Nandigram . This was not the first time. In the 2021 Assembly election, he had defeated her in Nandigram as well. Bhabanipur and Nandigram are both important Assembly constituencies in West Bengal.

How the Election Outcome Happened

The 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election brought a change in government. For 14 years, TMC was in power. Now, the BJP has won.  Union Home Minister Amit Shah  announced that Adhikari would be the Chief Minister designate. This announcement came right after the BJP legislative party meeting. The new government will form after the oath ceremony on 9 May 2026.

Who Takes the Oath?

The  Governor of West Bengal  will administer the oath of office to Suvendu Adhikari. This is the normal process under the Constitution. The Chief Minister is always the leader of the largest party in the Assembly.
