Avalanche Tragedy in the Swiss Alps

Former Olympic snowboarder Ueli Kestenholz has died after being caught in an avalanche in the Swiss Alps. His death was confirmed on January 13 by Swiss-Ski , following the incident in Valais . He was 50 years old .

 

The accident occurred while Kestenholz was riding off-piste terrain, highlighting the persistent risks associated with high-altitude freeride snowboarding.


Avalanche Incident in Valais Under Investigation

The avalanche struck the eastern slope of the Hockuchriz peak in the Lötschental valley at an altitude of around 2,400 metres (7,900 feet) . Kestenholz was snowboarding with a companion when the snow slide occurred.

While his companion escaped without injury, Kestenholz was buried under snow. Rescue teams managed to locate and extract him, after which he was airlifted by helicopter for emergency medical treatment. Authorities in Valais have stated that the cause of the avalanche remains unknown , and the matter is under review by the public prosecutor’s office.


Olympic Bronze in Snowboarding’s Debut Era

Kestenholz achieved international recognition at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics , where he won a bronze medal in the giant slalom event.

The Nagano Games were historic as they marked snowboarding’s first inclusion in the Olympic programme , making Kestenholz one of the sport’s earliest Olympic medallists. He later represented Switzerland again at the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2006 Turin Winter Olympics before retiring from elite competition.


X Games Success and Multi-Sport Career

Beyond the Olympics, Kestenholz enjoyed major success at the Winter X Games , winning gold medals in snowboard cross in 2003 and 2004 .

After stepping away from the World Cup circuit, he remained deeply engaged with adventure sports. His post-competitive years were marked by a shift toward freeride snowboarding , along with pursuits such as paragliding and surfing , reinforcing his reputation as a versatile outdoor athlete.
