India and USA: A New Chapter of Friendship in 2026

Overview

India and the USA held high-level talks in New Delhi in May 2026. Leaders discussed defence, trade, technology, energy, and the Indo-Pacific region. Both nations want to strengthen their partnership. The TRUST initiative and a new defence framework are key parts of this growing friendship.

The Big Picture

India and the United States are becoming very close partners. In May 2026, important leaders from both countries met in New Delhi. The talks were about many things. These include defence, trade, new technology, energy, and keeping the Indo-Pacific region safe and open. The people at the talks were Marco Rubio (US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor), Ajit Doval (Indian National Security Advisor), S. Jaishankar (Indian External Affairs Minister), Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Vikram Misri (Indian Foreign Secretary). These meetings show that both countries want to work together for a long time.

Defence and Security Cooperation

Defence is a big part of the India-US friendship. On 25 March 2026, the 18th India-US Defence Policy Group meeting was held in New Delhi. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and US Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby led the meeting. They talked about making military equipment together, sharing intelligence, doing joint military exercises, and sharing defence technology.

A very important step was taken on 31 October 2025. A 10-year Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership was signed in Washington, D.C. This framework allows both countries to share more intelligence, do more joint exercises, share logistics, and develop defence technology together. This is a big promise for the next ten years.

The TRUST Initiative and New Technology

Technology is changing the world. India and the USA want to use technology to help each other. In February 2025, both countries launched the TRUST initiative. TRUST stands for Transforming the Relationship Utilising Strategic Technology. This new plan is an upgrade of the older iCET (Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology). Under TRUST, both countries will work on space, semiconductors, quantum technologies, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence (AI). These are all very important for the future.

Trade and Economic Ties

Trade between India and the USA is growing fast. In May 2026, a new India-US Trade Facilitation Portal was launched. This happened during Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s visit to Washington, D.C. The portal helps businesses trade more easily. Both countries have set a big target. They want to reach 500 billion dollars in trade.

In February 2026, the USA announced a new trade deal with India. This deal covers market access for US products, lower taxes on industrial and farm goods, and purchases of US energy and other products worth over 500 billion dollars. More talks happened in Washington, D.C., in December 2025 and May 2026. These talks covered strong supply chains, defence industry cooperation, space, semiconductors, quantum tech, biotechnology, and energy security.

Energy and Critical Minerals

Energy is very important for every country. India and the USA talked about energy security in their May 2026 meetings. They also discussed critical minerals. These are special minerals used in phones, batteries, and other modern devices. By working together, both countries can make sure they have enough energy and minerals for their people and industries.

Nuclear Cooperation and Counter-Terrorism

Nuclear energy is another area of cooperation. India and the USA
