  • Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: I am on a 180-day tourist visa. When must I register if I want to stay longer?
A: You must register  before  the 180-day period expires. Earlier you could register within 14 days after expiry. Now you cannot wait.

Q2: What are “emergent circumstances” for extended stay?
A: The rules do not list specific examples, but generally include serious illness, natural disaster, or family emergency. Routine reasons like tourism or business will not qualify.

Q3: My child was born in India to me (Indian citizen) and my foreign spouse. Do I need to inform anyone?
A: No. The 30-day intimation rule for visa services does not apply if either parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain the child’s Indian citizenship.

Q4: Do all hospitals have to report every foreign patient?
A: Yes. Any hospital or nursing home that provides medical or lodging facilities to a foreigner must furnish prescribed information to the Registration Officer.

Q5: What happens if I do not register on time?
A: You may face fines, deportation, or legal action under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. Overstaying a visa is a serious offence.
