India Postpones First International Big Cat Alliance Summit Due to Ebola Concerns

These species face threats like habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The IBCA promotes shared knowledge, funding, and conservation action across countries.

India’s Commitment Remains Strong

The Environment Ministry stated that India remains fully committed to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. The postponement is only a timing issue. India is not backing away from its leadership role. In fact, India has been running successful big cat conservation programmes for decades. Project Tiger (started in 1973) is one of the world’s most successful wildlife conservation efforts. India also brought cheetahs back from extinction in the country through an ambitious reintroduction project. The IBCA is an extension of this commitment on a global stage.

What Is the African Union?

The African Union (AU) is a continental organisation of 55 African member states. Its headquarters is in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The AU works on political, economic, and social integration across Africa. The chairperson of the AU Commission is a key leader. India consulted with the AU before deciding to postpone the summits. This shows strong India-Africa cooperation.

New Dates to Be Announced

New dates for the IBCA Summit will be announced after consultations with participating countries and stakeholders. India will monitor the health situation in Africa. Once the Ebola outbreak is under control, the summit will be rescheduled. In the meantime, IBCA members will continue their conservation work through online meetings and existing programmes.

A Human Touch: Why Delaying Was the Right Call

Imagine inviting guests from 30 countries to your home. But some of them are sick or at risk. They cannot travel. Even if they travel, they might put others at risk. The responsible thing is to wait. That is exactly what India did. The postponement is not a failure. It is a sign of maturity and care for human life. Wildlife conservation can wait a few months. Health emergencies cannot. India showed that it values its African partners not just as delegates, but as human beings.
