Until recently, Indian freedivers did not have an official body to represent them. That changed in 2026. The Freediving Association of India was formed by Archana Sankaranarayanan. This new association became an Observer Member of AIDA International in March 2026. Observer Member means it can participate in meetings and events but does not have full voting rights yet. Still, this is a big step. It gives official global representation for Indian freedivers. Because of this association, India can now send official teams to world championships.
AIDA and the World Championship Background
AIDA International organises freediving competitions around the world. The 34th AIDA Freediving World Championship was held in Wakayama, Japan, from 28 June to 2 July 2025. That was where Archana Thiagarajan first competed. Another important event happened on 4 March 2026. Dinesh Soundappa made a national record dive of 34.6 metres at San Antonio Beach in Calapan, Philippines. This shows that Indian freedivers are improving fast.
Why This Team Matters
Sending an official team to Budapest is a big deal for several reasons. First, it shows that freediving is growing in India. Second, it gives Indian athletes a chance to compete against the best in the world. Third, it inspires more people to take up the sport. Fourth, it puts India on the global freediving map. Fifth, it proves that Indian athletes can succeed in non-traditional sports. These three athletes are not just competing for medals. They are competing for respect and recognition.
Conclusion: A Breath of Fresh Air for Indian Sports
India has many famous sports like cricket, hockey, and badminton. But freediving is new. It is challenging. It requires mental strength, physical fitness, and courage. Archana, Akshay, and Vachan have all of these. As they fly to Budapest in June 2026, they carry the hopes of a nation. Win or lose, they are already winners. They have broken barriers. They have shown that Indians can do anything – even hold their breath and swim underwater like fish. Let us cheer for our first official freediving team.
