Gujarat Foundation Day 2026: History, Significance and Celebrations.

Introduction: A Day of Pride and Identity.

On the 1st of May each year Gujarat celebrates its Foundation Day. The day is the day of the establishment of the state in 1960 after its division with the previous Bombay State.

This is also known as Gujarat Gaurav Diwas. It glorifies the identity, culture and growth of the state. The major celebrations are being conducted in Surat in 2026.

The 2026 events are lively and massive. The happenings are traditional and contemporary exhibition.

  • Contests and sensitization activities.

The bicycle tricks are indicative of bravery, training and accuracy. Such events are conducted in large public places such as Y Junction in Surat. They are also interested in involving citizens, particularly the youths.


History of the Gujarat formation.

The formation of Gujarat starts when India became independent in 1947.

A number of the western India regions were restructured as:

  • Saurashtra
  • Kutch
  • Bombay State

These regions were incorporated into a bigger administrative unit in 1956 known as the Greater Bombay State . This state comprised of Gujarati speaking and Marathi speaking.


Mahagujarat Movement: a demand of a separate state.

In the 1950s, the call to have a separate Gujarat state increased. This movement is referred to as Mahagujarat Movement.

It was headed by Indulal Yagnik or Indu Chacha. He rallied the people in the area.

This demand was founded on the linguistic identity. Individuals desired that Gujarati speakers be given their own state. Initially, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was apprehensive. But the mounting pressure by the people resulted in acceptance.


Birth of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

The Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960 , split the Bombay State into Bombay and Thane on May 1, 1960.

There were two new states formed:

Gujarat to speak Gujarati.
Maharashtra is of Marathi speakers.

This was the formal birth of Gujarat as an independent state with its identity.

The Gujarat Day is not just a historical event. It is a festival of culture, togetherness, and development.
