Centre High-Powered Demography Mission Soon to Check Illegal Immigration at Borders

Overview

The Union government is planning a High-Powered Demography Mission. This mission will tackle illegal immigration, infiltration, and population changes in India’s border areas. Prime Minister Narendra Modi first announced it during his Independence Day speech in 2025. On 22 May 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the mission will be announced soon. The government has also prepared a deportation policy and a Smart Border project. These steps will strengthen border security and internal safety.

What Is the High-Powered Demography Mission?

Demography is the study of population. It looks at the size, distribution, age, sex, and movement of people. In border areas, illegal immigration can suddenly change the demography. The High-Powered Demography Mission is designed to find and stop such changes. The mission will focus on known infiltration points along India’s borders. Border Security Force (BSF) personnel will be deployed at these points. The main goal is to detect illegal entry routes and take action against undocumented migrants living in border districts. This mission is a direct response to concerns about population shifts caused by illegal immigrants, especially from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Why Is This Mission Needed?

India shares very long land borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The India-Bangladesh border is about 4,096 km long. The India-Pakistan border is about 3,323 km long. Many parts of these borders are porous. For decades, people have crossed into India without valid papers. This has changed the population mix of several border districts. The government believes this puts pressure on local jobs, schools, hospitals, and security. The High-Powered Demography Mission will map these changes and help remove illegal settlers.

The Deportation Policy: A Key Tool

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) framed a complete deportation policy. It came into effect by April 2026. This policy is a major step. It requires every state to form district-level special task forces. These task forces will find, identify, and deport illegal migrants, mainly from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The policy also requires the construction of holding centres for undocumented migrants waiting to be deported. These centres must have 10-feet-high barbed wire boundaries to prevent escape. The government has fixed a 90-day time limit to verify the nationality of suspected Bangladeshi or Myanmarese nationals. If a person is found to be an illegal immigrant, they will be deported within that period. This fast process will prevent long court cases and speed up removals.

Smart Border Project: Technology on the Frontline

The government plans to roll out a Smart Border project within one year. This project will cover India’s borders with both Pakistan and Bangladesh. It will use modern surveillance tools such as:

  • Drone radars  – to detect movement from the air

  • High-resolution cameras  – to watch activities day and night

  • Fencing and floodlights  – to block and light up border areas

  • Thermal imaging devices  – to see body heat even in darkness

  • Patrol systems  – to coordinate ground movement

These tools will help BSF personnel spot infiltration attempts in real time. The Smart Border project will reduce the need for large numbers
