Bhupender Yadav Launches ‘Lion’ Species Spotlight Programme at Sasan Gir

OVERVIEW

Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav launched the ‘Lion’ Species Spotlight Programme at Sasan Gir in Gujarat. The event took place just before the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026. The programme highlights India’s success in Asiatic lion conservation. The lion population in Gir has been rising steadily. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said Gir is a living example of how economic growth and wildlife conservation can go together. India will host the first IBCA Summit in New Delhi on 1–2 June 2026. The summit will see participation from 95 countries and over 400 delegates.


‘LION’ SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN GIR

The ‘Lion’ Species Spotlight Programme was organised as a pre‑event to the  International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit 2026 . Union Environment Minister  Bhupender Yadav  launched the programme at  Sasan Gir , Gujarat. The event focused on:

  • Lion conservation efforts in India

  • Global challenges faced by lion populations

  • Promoting international cooperation among lion range countries

The programme also included educational presentations, conservation films, and participation from students and experts.

GIR: A MODEL OF CONSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel  addressed the event. He stated that Gir is a living example of how economic growth and wildlife conservation can coexist.

IBCA SUMMIT 2026

India will host the first ever  International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit  in  New Delhi  on  1–2 June 2026  under the leadership of Prime Minister  Narendra Modi .

About IBCA:

  • It is a global alliance for big cat conservation.

  • It covers  seven big cat species :

    1. Tiger

    2. Lion

    3. Leopard

    4. Snow Leopard

    5. Cheetah

    6. Jaguar

    7. Puma

The summit will see participation from  95 countries  and  over 400 delegates . The aim is to strengthen:

  • International cooperation
